The Neighbourhood - Sweater Weather
“It’s too cold for you here, now, so let me hold both your hands in the holes of my sweater”.
It’s a pretty cutesy line from LA’s newest hipsters, who’s mystique keeps our attention solely on their music. Sweater Weather follows the release ofFemale Robbery in anticipation of the quintet’s debut EP ‘I’m Sorry’ released in May.
The Neighbourhood operate in a post-Lana world where retro is king - from the slide guitar sound, to the black and white videos (Female Robbery’s Hitchcockian imagery) and the final third of Sweater Weather that is more than a little suggestive of Chris Isaak’s Wicked Game. But this being 2012, that’s not all. It all begins with a pounding hip hop beat and the rhythms of the vocal delivery border on rap. It’s an irresistible and hypnotic fusion of styles that’s utterly ‘now’.
It’s the lyrics that tug at the heartstrings most though. Sexually-charged lines like “No shirt. No blouse. Just Us” depict teenage love with perfect economy of words. That central chorus lyric and its catchy melody are key though. Who says cool can’t be charming?
The Knocks - The Feeling
The Knocks have had a busy summer. From remixing Of Monsters and Men to playing All Things Go’s One Year Anniversary show, they’ve had their work cut out for them, to say the least. Fortunately for us, they show no sign of stopping. Their latest release “The Feeling” is a perfect end-of-the-summer jam that’s nothing short of anthemic. If you thought you had a hard time getting “Geronimo” out of your head, you’re in for a treat. Peter and The Magician - Memory
In case you were wondering who Peter is, you might also find him moonlighting under the moniker Yuksek. As for The Magician, well…that’s his normal name. And together, they form Peter & The Magician!
The duo are set to unleash their second EP Memory on July 9th via Kitsuné, featuring this original track as well as a few mixes from NSFW and Poindexter. Pretty sure this label never disappoints…
RAC - If You Forget Me (Gigamesh Remix)
Both RAC and Gigamesh have been killing it lately, pumping out originals and remixes that instantaneously rise above the rest and sit atop the charts.
So, seeing them both together on the same track naturally brings out all sorts of excitement. Perhaps even you did a double-take when you saw this title.
At this point I should probably let you know that this track, featuring Liset Alea, was actually released all the way back in 2010. And barely anyone noticed, myself included.
Just like Bruno (of Golden Scissors), I’m willing to wager that this one would have torn apart the blogosphere had it been a freshly hyped release today.
